Who knows what is Good or Bad?

Hi,

Have you ever considered what is good or bad?

Usually we think that this is a "black or white" issue.

Good is when things go well or as we expect and Bad is the opposite.

Well, I'm not so sure.I think it comes in shades of gray.

Here's what just happened. You can decide for yourself.

Today my wife took my two year old son Max to the doctor for acheck up. She just called me and told me that Max has to be testedfor a problem!

He needs an eating test. (I didn't know what it was either)

My first response was anger! Who says he needs a test? He's fine!

My second response was concern. At this point I am thinking that this is one of those "Bad" things. After asking a few good questionsthis is what I found out.

Well, as it turns out he does chew his food in a manner that isincorrect and can cause stress on his jaw. It is something I havenoticed but didn't realize was an issue.

The treatment consists of working with a speech pathologist to helphim learn to chew correctly.

My third response is resolve and relief.

After thinking about it I understand that this is really a "Good"thing.

What?
Is Josh crazy?

No, it is "Good" because ignorance is not bliss, ignorance isfuture pain!

Knowing there is a problem and getting the services Max needs willallow us to lessen it's impact. We are forewarned and thereforeforearmed.

While it is not what I wanted to deal with, thank goodness it isn'ta major issue like some people have with their kid's health. Inthat I am blessed.

So, who knows what is good or bad?

What do you think?

Josh,
I think you are right about this issue. We are very protective of our children and it hurts to think that maybe something is wrong. Our best instinct is to "protect" and sometimes we are blinded by that. The thing that we need to realize is that getting help for our children early is our best possible means to an end. If we let problems grow, then they get bigger. It is hard to be a parent, we just have to take a step back and ask are we doing "whatever it takes" to help our child. I'll do whatever it takes, how about you?

Of course, just as always.

Is there any other way?

Josh, I agree completely. Whether something is good or bad depends on how much we know.
In 2004, I began 3 years of surgeries, 12 in all. It seemed like a bad thing. I was let go from my job, (in prison-a terrible job for me), and had to stay home. Since then, I began looking at what was really wrong, where I really needed healing. I started college. I started writing a book. I built a web site. I created 2 blogs. Most importantly, I started living life according to who I really am instead of who everyone else wanted me to be.
Is constant pain a good thing? Not necessarily, but it brought my attention to the fact that I needed healing. Were the surgeries good? They put me in bed and on the couch so that I could not make myself so busy that I didn't have to look at the real issues.
Good or bad is a jugement based on available knowledge.
Thanks for the post, Josh.
